About the conference site and venue

The University of Copenhagen is not only Denmark's largest institution of education and research, but it is also one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe. It was inaugurated on June 1st, 1479, after King Christian I was granted approval for its establishment by Pope Sixtus IV. Thus the university is more than 525 years old.

EPIC 2008 will take place on the Frue Plads (Our Lady's Square), where the first main building of the university was built in 1536. The original building was destroyed by a fire in 1728 and again in 1807. The present building, in which the conference will take place, was built in 1829-36 and is approximately 175 years old.

The central gathering point of the conference (for keynotes etc.) will be the official ceremonial hall of the university. This is where the university has its most important and official events such matriculation ceremonies.

For more information, see the University of Copenhagen website:

The conference venue is located right in the very heart of Copenhagen, close to cafes, restaurants, shopping streets, and amongst historical buildings. Right on Frue Plads, for instance, in front of the conference venue is the Vor Frue Kirke, or the Cathedral of Copenhagen consecrated in 1829 (the site has housed a church since 1290). A large number of sightseeing, dining, and shopping options are just around the corner.

Transportation Options

There are different ways to get around Copenhagen: trains, metro, buses, taxis, and even bikes (the city is known as "the city of bikes"). For more general information see http://www.visitcopenhagen.com/content/tourist/plan_and_book/how_to_get_...

For getting around the city, it is fairly simple to use the travel planner, which will tell you how to get from one place to another, for instance whether, where and when you should take a bus, a train, a metro, or perhaps shift between these. See the travel planner at http://www.rejseplanen.dk (click on the English flag in the top right corner).
